BARRIE ZONE AAA COLTS
A no-brainer first round pick in the 2021 OHL Draft, Cameron Mercer has been playing at an elite level for the majority of his hockey career. Mercer spent last season playing for the Minor Midget team for the Barrie Zone AAA Colts, making the leap a year earlier in comparison to other 05’ prospects. Mercer is a dedicated and mature player for his age. Mercer understands what it takes to play at a high level as well as find success in doing so. Mercer has an incredibly high skating ability which allows him to dominate competition on both ends of the ice, zipping past defenders with ease. Mercer's top notch athleticism gives him an edge when fighting along the boards, or playing through contact while pushing the puck up the ice. Mercer has a plethora of offensive skills at his disposal, none more effective than his hard and heavy wrist shot. One of the top scorers in the ETA, Mercer uses his deadly shooting ability to blast pucks past goaltenders on a regular basis. Mercers shot is only made more lethal when you take into account his “blink and you might miss it” release. Mercer has an amazing ability to get shots off at an elite level, not leaving defenses any time to adjust or prepare for the shot rifling past them. Mercer has all the requirements to be a go-to goal scorer at the next level, but still has a pass-first mentality, which only makes him harder to plan against. Mercer has the ability to scan the ice and find the best scoring opportunity available. Mercer has a high hockey IQ which keeps him out of penalty trouble, as well as gives him a mental edge over the competition as he is able to make moves without a second thought. With this mixture of next level skill and high hockey IQ, Mercer has what it takes to become a top player wherever his career takes him. Mercer has all the tools to become a great player at an advanced level and if he can continue his current style of play, the future looks bright for the young centreman.
