A top netminder in the HEO, Mathis Mainville has tremendous upside. A fantastic athlete equipped with a strong side-to-side game, Mainville is able to glide from post to post to make cross crease saves look easy. With his ability to flow off the post, Mainville is rarely late to the puck, able to make the initial stop without creating high risk second chance opportunities. Mainville's recovery ability is remarkable, able to make quick plays off the ground and get back up on his skates once the puck has been corralled by his team. Mainville has a superior skill set to the majority of 05’ goalie prospects, a far more developed game then his peers. One of the biggest factors that sets Mainville apart from his competition is his high level hockey IQ. Mainville reads offences well, always able to keep his net, and maintain a safe position ready to make a sudden move with the puck while taking away space behind him. Mainville is comfortable in both the butterfly and the standup. Mainville is technically sound, he knows the game well and does not make mistakes that wind up hurting his team. While Mainville has demonstrated himself to be a top netminder in the 2021 draft, he still has not hit his peak. Mainville is increasingly getting better at his craft and his upside continues to grow with it. Mainville will be a well sought after player in the upcoming years and will be frustrating offences for years to come.
