Left shooting Gabriel Carvalho is the type of defenseman where you know what you’re getting night in and night out. Carvalho is an extremely consistent player, which makes him a valuable asset for his team, as it allows them to rely on him heavily when they need to. Carvalho is praised for his high end skating ability, and his hockey IQ. Thanks to this IQ, Carvalho is capable of making the right play on a very consistent basis, whether it’s making a well timed physical play in the corner or creating opportunities for his team offensively, while also making him very responsible on the defensive end of the spectrum as well. For Carvalho, the main goal over the course of the season will be for him to get stronger. Cravalho already has a pretty large frame to begin with, but becoming stronger would help to shore up his defensive abilities more, allowing him to muscle off opponents easier, while also being able to push them around as well. Continuing to prioritize his speed will help make him one of the most reliable two-way defensemen around, with his already explosive stride making him all the more effective in the offensive zone. Comparably, something along the lines of a discount Cale Makar would make sense, as Carvalho matches the playstyle of a fast, highly skilled defender with good hands and playmaking abilities. Carvalho’s poise and level headedness will also help to push him forward to the next level. With the 2022 OHL draft coming near, Cravalho could see himself going in the higher to mid rounds of the draft, where he could transition to the OHL as a smooth skating defender who can be utilized in multiple situations.
