A player with great poise and confidence, Ryan Shier has several on-ice assets in his skill set that set him apart from other prospects. Shier is intellectually sound, a smart player with a strong hockey IQ able to make quick decisions on the spot in order to make winning plays. Shier makes his linemates better while he shares the ice with them, able to get his linemates involved as much as possible to ensure his team is in a position to leave victorious. Along with his excellent playmaking abilities, Shier has fantastic size and strength, able to muscle players off the puck as well as play through contact while controlling the puck. Shier excels in the physicality department of the game, able to lay out hard checks along the boards, as well as has a stellar ability to hold his own while fighting in front of the net. Shier is a fantastic all-around player with no obvious weaknesses. Shier is a top two-way player in the ETA, able to make an impact on the game wherever he is on the ice. Shier is a legitimate goal scorer, able to find the back of the net in multiple situations, able to beat goaltenders one on one, as well as able to shoot through traffic finding the soft spots within the defense. One aspect in Shier's game that will need improvement moving forward is his skating ability. Shier is an adequate skater currently, but at the next level Shier will have difficulties playing at a higher level of speed and pace. If Shier can continue to hone in on his skating abilities his tremendous skill set will surely translate and could potentially lead Shier to becoming a phenomenal hockey player as his career progresses.
