A name to look out for ahead of the 2021 OHL Entry Draft, Zach Sandhu plays a very sound defensive game. A defender focused on his play in his own zone, Sandhu may not be the flashiest of players but he is a reliable presence on the ice. He makes an effort to be the last man back and makes sure that his goaltender is never left out to dry. Sandhu has offensive skill but leaves that in the back of his toolkit. He is mostly utilized as the defensive defenseman on his pairing as his coaches trust him for his play in his own zone.

Playing primarily in front of the net, Sandhu uses his size to his advantage. He stands at 6’1 and weighs 175 lbs which he uses to push opposing players away from the net and take away the threat they pose. He blocks shots and is really aggressive in board battles.

His skating abilities are a major asset of his game. It is most prominent in his own zone with the puck on his stick. He doesn’t force passes to exit the defensive zone. He creates space for himself in his own zone by skating past or faking out opposing players to create passing lanes. This is complemented with an underrated set of hands. Some defenders try to take chances in the offensive zone to get their name on the scoresheet but Sandhu doesn’t take unnecessary risks. He recognizes his strengths and weaknesses and knows what he can do to help his team.
