One of the top defenseman prospects in the 05’ class, RJ Schmidt makes a massive impact on both sides of the puck. Schmidt is a strong stay at home defenceman equipped with spectacular offensive skills. Schmidt has an absolute cannon of a shot, able to rocket past traffic and is nearly impossible for netminders to stop. Schmidts power is clear to see but with his shot also comes a stellar ability to hit the openings shown to him with high accuracy. Schmidt is a fantastic skater, able to move well with the puck as well as position himself in the perfect spot when moving without it. Schmidt is comfortable walking the blueline thanks to his skating ability, able to control possession of the puck and take the lead on playmaking duties when inside the offensive zone. Schmidt has a great outlet pass, able to go tape-to-tape through traffic with tremendous accuracy. Schmidt is a responsible defenceman, always taking care of his end and prevents any breakouts from formulating. Schmidt is a tireless worker, never taking a shift off. Schmidt never cheats on a shift, always playing with a tenacity to make winning plays, all while still maintaining composure. Schmidt has great mental fortitude while on the ice, never rattled, always ready to make the next play. Schmidt is filled head to toe with upside, with a great frame coupled with highly developed skills, Schmidt should be a prospect to watch closely in the future.
