One of the top offensive prospects in the 2021 OHL Draft, Matthew Verspeeten has a polished and high end offensive repertoire. Verspeeten is lights out offensively, able to make highlight level plays in any situation. Verspeeten has superior skills when compared to the majority of his 05’ peers. From shooting to passing, to everything else in between, Verspeeten has it in spades. A beautiful facilitator with fantastic on-ice awareness and poise, Verspeeten makes plays others cannot see. Verspeeten can make plays out of thin air, able to generate scoring chances for himself and his linemates at any given moment. Verspeeten shoots with pin-point accuracy, able to pick his spot with ease on route to the net. Verspeeten is borderline unfair on the power play unit as his elite scoring ability makes it near impossible for penalty kill units to stop him when down a man. Verspeeten is not just offensively gifted but is a hard worker on the ice as well. Verspeeten is solid defensively, able to read a play and put himself in position to make plays on the puck, or prevent a scoring opportunity off the puck. When Verspeeten battles for puck possession he often relies on his stick work rather than his physical frame. While at six-foot-two, Verspeeten has a great build but is still on the slim side of the spectrum. Verspeeten is not overly fond of physicality which can cause problems for the young forward when working to put his team in scoring situations, as well as on the defensive side of the puck. Besides his below average physical ability, Verspeeten is still brimming with talent. Verspeeten plays with a need to score, a need he often satisfies when given the chance. With his gifted scoring ability, if Verspeeten can continue to develop his physical frame, as well as continue to find the back of the net consistently, we could see a top of the line scorer at the next level in a matter of no time.
